Quick Facts
The reason smoking is harmful
Knowing the true cause of harm helps you avoid it like a pro. Burning tobacco creates smoke that contains many harmful toxins. These toxins in cigarette smoke, not nicotine, cause illnesses like heart disease and cancer which is why it is best to quit. The US FDA states “it’s the thousands of chemicals contained in tobacco and tobacco smoke that make tobacco use so deadly.” You definitely don’t want to expose yourself to the smoke from burning tobacco right?
Rethinking nicotine
But what about nicotine? This compound is known for its mood-altering properties, which can make one feel calm and relaxed, and it’s one of the reasons people smoke. Many believe that nicotine is what makes smoking harmful, but that’s not true. According to the US FDA, it’s the “toxic mix of chemicals—not nicotine—that causes the serious health effects among those who use tobacco products, including fatal lung diseases, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancer.” Its time to rethink what we’ve been told about nicotine. While it’s addictive, it is not responsible for smoking-related illnesses.
